What could be sweeter than a fireworks display in Sugar House, Utah? Thanks to the hard work of some dedicated residents, the show will go on this year, July 4, Sugar House Park, 1330 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84106. If you live in a Sugar House home, you might be able to take in the half-hour fireworks display right from your own front yard! But then, you’d miss all of the vendors and fun activities at the park starting at noon. Fireworks are expected to start at 10 p.m. Bring a blanket, lawn chairs and your cameras; because, this is going to be epic. Vortex Fireworks puts on a great show.
Live music always sets a celebratory tone and organizers of this year’s Independence Day event have scheduled bands to keep fans entertained including Scotty Haze, Bombshell Academy and In Ship Down.
Sugar House is one of Salt Lake City’s oldest neighborhoods. It’s located from about 500 East to 2100 East and from 1300 South to 2700 South. The business and commercial center of the neighborhood is located at 1100 East 2100 South which is also the northern end of Highland Drive. Some Sugar House homes and businesses are located outside these boundaries and still use the name because the community is so readily recognized throughout Utah.
There’s a great back story to this event. I read it online at SugarHouseFireworks.com. Apparently the traditional fireworks display was scheduled to be discontinued due to a lack of funds. That was in 2010 (think, recession). Resident Scott Workman picked up the ball and ran with it. After getting approval from local authorities, Workman began raising funds for the 2010 show. Sponsors came to the rescue and the show did go on! The project was so successful that three years later Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County and local businesses have stepped up to help make the 2013 community tradition spectacular. Too often the small and large businesses that contribute to important community events go unnoticed. They really are the lifeblood of the community and partnered with eager citizens there’s nothing such a team can’t do.
This year’s title sponsors are: Carl’s Jr. and Jamba Juice
2013 Major Sponsors include:
- KSL TV
- KSL News Radio
- Salt Lake City
- Salt Lake County
- KJZZ 14
- Security Service Federal Credit Union
- Renaissance Flooring & Interiors
- Utah’s Classic 103.5 Arrow
- Royale Photography
Please remember to thank these businesses for helping to keep Sugar House home to a patriotic tradition.
Worth noting: According to an online Wikipedia article, “Sugar House was established in 1853, six years after Brigham Young led the Mormon settlers into the valley. Its name derives from the sugar beet test factory of the Deseret Manufacturing Company, which was established in a former blacksmith shop in the area.”
